How We Continued Giving While Social Distancing

Philanthropy has always been important to Aver. We’ve been fortunate to be involved in a number of charitable initiatives, and though having to stay socially distant in 2020 did impact the kind of philanthropic work we could do, it didn’t stop us from contributing however we could.

Each holiday season, one of our favorite Aver traditions is participating in The Ohio State University Comprehensive Cancer Center’s Hope for the Holidays program. This program connects departments and companies to patient families who are facing financial difficulties during the holiday season – and fortunately, the pandemic did not stop us from participating in 2020! Last holiday season, we adopted a family of four and fulfilled their wishlist in its entirety; this marked the sixth year of Aver’s participation in this program and our eighth sponsored family.

Also around the holidays, Aver is fortunate to be able to sponsor children in the Franklin County Children Services’ Holiday Wish program. This program allows youths under the care of Franklin County Children Services to request a special toy or gift. Through the continued generosity of our Averians, we have donated thousands of dollars to this program and have fulfilled the wishlists of dozens of children!

While the holidays certainly allow plenty of opportunity to give back to the community, we are thrilled to participate in charitable causes throughout the year. Here in Columbus, we are proud to have participated in Pelotonia, a charitable bike ride, for many years and together with our employees, have raised tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research for the James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute at The Ohio State University. We have partnered with the Junior Achievement of Central Ohio program to teach kids the importance of financial literacy. And we’ve had numerous service days over the years, going to the Holy Family Soup kitchen and other charitable organizations in order to support and strengthen our community.

The pandemic put a lot of these programs on hold over the last year, so Aver had to find other ways to contribute. In 2020, Aver donated $7500 to the ALS Association of Georgia to help discover treatments and find a cure for ALS. We were also fortunate to support the Westside Future Fund, an Atlanta nonprofit committed to helping Historic Westside neighborhoods revitalize and redevelop. And, last summer, Aver was given the opportunity to sponsor an artist through the Greater Columbus Arts Council. This sponsorship supported an out-of-work artist to create a positive and uplifting mural outside of our office in downtown Columbus. The mural was on display downtown for four months before being relocated and installed elsewhere in the city.

Giving back to our community is one of our rituals. We are extremely grateful for the numerous opportunities to practice this ritual, both as a company and individuals, and look forward to getting more involved as we continue to expand our footprint in Columbus and beyond!
